Dental implants: who is a good candidate?

Implants are the closest thing to a natural tooth — but not everyone is ready for one straight away. Here is what your dentist will check.

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium post. It looks and feels natural and does not rely on neighbouring teeth. But the success of an implant depends on the health of your mouth and body.

What your dentist will assess

  • Bone: there must be enough bone to hold the implant. A scan helps to check this.
  • Gums: gum disease must be treated first.
  • General health: conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes can affect healing.
  • Habits: smoking reduces success rates.

What if I do not have enough bone?

In many cases bone can be rebuilt with grafting before or during implant placement. Other options, such as a bridge or denture, may also suit you.

How long does it take?

The implant needs a few months to bond with the bone before the final crown is placed. Your dentist will give you a timeline after your examination.
