When decay or injury reaches the nerve (pulp) of a tooth, it can cause severe pain, swelling and an abscess. A root canal treatment cleans the infection from inside the tooth, disinfects the canals and seals them.
With modern anaesthesia and technique, the procedure is usually no more uncomfortable than a filling. Afterwards a crown is normally advised to protect the tooth.

Common questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
With proper anaesthesia the treatment itself is comfortable. Mild soreness for a couple of days is common and settles with simple medication.
How many visits will I need?
Often one to three visits, depending on the infection and the tooth.
Why do I need a crown afterwards?
A treated tooth is more brittle. A crown protects it from fracture.
